Dear Goddard Colleagues,
On May 12, a magnitude 7.9 (Richter) earthquake jolted Sichuan, a province in southwestern China. The main quake and hundreds of aftershocks followed have destroyed thousands of buildings in the area. Infrastructures such as communication networks and electrical towers have also been severely damaged. Tens of thousands of people were killed, hundreds of thousands are injured, and tens of millions people across the region are homeless and/or forced to evacuate from the region due to flooding and aftershock warnings. This earthquake is the worst natural disaster to hit China in 30 years.
Since the initial earthquake, numerous renowned disaster relief organizations such as the American Red Cross, MercyCorps, and the Tzu Chi Foundation USA have extended emergency reliefs in places with the most pressing needs.
Recognizing the lengthy recovery process, the Goddard Chinese American Club is launching a "Pledges for Disaster Relief for Sichuan Earthquake" campaign. If you are interested in helping with this campaign, we encourage you to participate in any of the following ways:
- Donate to one or more of the listed charities that are presently helping the earthquake victims;
- Contact us if you need guidance with the donation process:
request for further information of the earthquake relief effort or of the charitable organizations,
redirect donations for you and ensure you receive the proper receipts etc.; and
- Make verbal pledges and let us know how you would like to help.
Attached is a list of IRS 501(c)(3) relief organizations that have been assisting with the effort. Please note that the Goddard Chinese American Club is not endorsing any particular charitable organization. Furthermore, some portion of the donation will be appropriated for by these groups for organizational overhead; please research wisely and discuss with us if this may be a concern of yours.
The once established Sichuan region has been wiped from the face of the earth; it will take years before full recovery. While the Chinese Government has vowed to rebuild the region, the millions of people displaced need any help they can receive to survive the devastating aftermath to bring their lives back on track. Please help out in this effort.
Sincerely,
Dean C. Tsai
